Safe Distance to Avoid Overlapping Traps?

The short version:
Maybe this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me any pointers or tips as to how close I can drop a trap next to a mob that is already trapped so that it catches the mob as soon as the first trap breaks, without putting it so close to the mob that it procs without giving any benefit. I've been experimenting with it, but when you've only got 2 cc jobs on a 5/6 pull, things can get a bit crazy and I was wondering if there are any sort of visual cues I could be looking for so that my second trap isn't wasted but the mob goes into it pretty much as soon as it takes a step after breaking out of the first one.
The long version:
I was running Shattered Halls last night. Two of the people in the group (Prot Warrior and Frost Mage) are people that I've been running instances with for the last few days and we've been doing rather well (imo). The fourth and fifth were a PUG MS Warrior and a very well geared Resto Druid.
As some of you may know, Shattered Halls can be a It is as its name implies: a lot of relatively narrow hallways, which can make strategic trap placement a bit tricky. I try to position myself and my traps so that when the first trap breaks, if the mob comes after me or goes after a clothie he runs into my trap, all the while making sure that I'm in position to keep up the dps on the tank mob. It doesn't happen all that often that a mob will break out of my trap and go after a clothie; I normally pull with Scorpid Sting and an auto shot or two so that I have enough threat on that mob to get it safely into my trap, but not so much threat that it takes effort from the tank to take over when the time comes.
I've seen it happen before where I've placed a trap too close to a trapped mob and a second or two later the new trap just fades out. Unless I drop the second trap right after the mob went into the first one, my cooldowns are then shot and I can count on some kiting to get things back under control. This is not ideal because with my normal 5-man setup these days, I also account for my fair share of dps which is lost while I'm kiting.
